Review: Rimmel Wake Me Up Concealer

26 April 2013

Rimmel Wake Me Up Concealer

Rimmel Wake Me Up Concealer, £5.49 (HERE)

Introduction

I normally get so excited about a product a few days after I buy it and can’t wait to write a review; then I carry on using the product and most of the time I continue to like it, but sometimes I actually start to dislike it. Because of that, I’m trying to wait at least 2 weeks before reviewing a product I think I really like, just so I’m 100% sure about it; if I do change my mind about it afterwards, at least I gave it a good go. And this is exactly why I’m reviewing this concealer today, nearly 2 months after buying it.

Rimmel Wake Me Up Concealer Review

About

This is the Rimmel Wake Me Up Concealer, Rimmel’s first full coverage concealer, which is packed full of vitamins and peptides to help brighten and illuminate the under eye area with an instant anti-fatigue effect. It’s also supposed to provide full coverage on spots and blemishes, and it’s available in 4 shades – Ivory, True Ivory, Classic Beige and Soft Beige; the shade I have is Classic Beige, which is a good colour match for my current NC30 paler skin tone.

Packaging

The concealer comes in a clear lipgloss-like tube with a dome applicator, which I particularly like because it’s easy to control the amount of product dispensed. Over-applying concealer is usually one of the biggest makeup mistakes that I was certainly guilty of in the past. The colour scheme is the same as the Rimmel Wake Me Up Foundation, which I’ve reviewed HERE.

Shades & Undertones

There are only 4 shades available, which is appalling; unless you have a light to medium skin tone, you won’t be happy with this concealer. My skin tone ranges from MAC NC35 to NC30; I’m currently NC30 and the shade Classic Beige, which is the second darkest shade, is a good colour match for me. Most shades are also quite yellow-toned, apart from True Ivory, which looks like it has a pink tinge to it.

Formulation & Consistency

This concealer is creamy, but not thick; if you’ve ever tried Collection 2000 Lasting Perfection Concealer, it’s like a thinned down version of that. It can feel quite slippery when applied to the face, and if over-applied, it becomes difficult to blend, so do not over-apply! Rimmel claims it can be used on spots, blemishes and under the eyes; I, particularly, found it awful under the eyes as it’s too slippery, it settles into my fine lines and throughout the day it starts to melt away.

On redness, however, I found this concealer to be exceptional! I have very dry skin and one of my biggest struggles is to find concealers that cover up redness and pigmentation without clinging to my dry patches or making my skin look flaky; I use this concealer around my nose (redness) and on my cheeks (pigmentation), blending with my fingers with a dabbing motion, until the concealer fully sinks into the skin.

This is one of the best all-round concealer for redness and pigmentation that I’ve ever tried! It’s not perfect, especially if you want something totally full coverage, and if you have oily skin; but it’s affordable and it’s worth a try if you’re looking for something with a medium coverage, or if you like the Collection 2000 Lasting Perfection concealer, but want something a bit less heavy that that.

Application

My advice is to dab it into the skin; if you rub it in, this concealer tends to sit on the surface, sliding and melting when you touch the area where you applied it. I’d highly recommend setting it with a powder, and my favourite is MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural, which can be found HERE.

Results

On the pictures you can see that this concealer really brightened my under-eye area without looking fake or off-tone; you can also see that I made the mistake of applying too much product, so it was really difficult to make it ‘disappear’ into the skin. I wouldn’t recommend this concealer for under the eyes if you have really dark circles, but I would definitely recommend it for redness and pigmentation.

It’s a little ironic that it’s supposed to make you look fresh and just woken up and yet isn’t too great when it comes to dark circles. Haha.

I know, right? It was a bit disappointing in that sense, but I guess the fact that I really liked it for redness and pigmentation, makes up for it! :)

I’ve heard really good things about this concealer, but I can’t find it anywhere here in the States. I need a really good (preferably inexpensive) concealer for my hyper pigmentation so I’ll definitely continue to be on the lookout for this one. Great review!

By the way, maybe you should do a favorite Spring&Summer lipsticks or products in general. I loved the lipstick series you did a few months back and I’d love to hear what some of your recommendations of lipsticks and products for the Spring & Summer. :)

Have you tried the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer? It’s just as good as this one, and inexpensive as well :)

Great idea about Spring lippies! Will add that to my list :) xx

I really like this concealer. Totally agree it needs to be dabbed rather than anything else.

I haven’t tried this product yet but I am considering on getting one eye concealer because I tend to have puffy and dark circles around my eyes sometimes. I have doubts on the product but I think it also depends on the user’s skin on how it will affect. Anyways, thanks for sharing this. Cheers!

I had the total opposite experience with the concealer haha! I found it perfect for under the eyes, it didn’t crease at all, but for any redness or blemishes i found it moved around too much. How funny! haha Great post! Your blog is great x

We’ve just done a review on Wake Me Up also, we’d love if you could
check it out if you get the chance :)

It’s been a little while since my last update. Last week was tough, but this week I’ve started to see the light at the end of the Hyperemesis tunnel.

I’ve been able to keep most of my food down and I can now drink sips of water. Honestly that is such an amazing feeling!

I’m still being sick and still limited on what I can eat, but everyday I tolerate a few more smells and food.

My cravings are so weird! Full of things I’ve never bothered with before - Brazilian hot dogs, McDonalds Fillet O’ Fish, tinned peaches, tuna mayo jacket potato.

I’m still very weak and out of breath if I walk around - my body is playing catch up with the last 2/3 months of living on barely nothing.

I’m into my 14th week and I honestly feel so hopeful right now. ❤️

Ad: Today is International Women’s Day and this Ad: Today is International Women’s Day and this year #LEGO are celebrating the women of the future; our imaginative, creative, inspirational little girls!

We were asked to take part in the campaign, replicating a classic LEGO ad from 1981, which shows a little girl proudly holding up her LEGO creation.

So when I asked Bella what she wanted to make, no surprises there, she chose a princess castle!

I feel like this reflects her personality so much; she’s sweet and kind, but also really knows her mind and is super determined to do what she wants, how she wants it! 💗 Didn’t she do well?!

I’ve stopped losing weight! 🙏🏻 It feels so I’ve stopped losing weight! 🙏🏻 It feels so good to step on the scales and not see those numbers going down anymore! I worried every single day for weeks, especially when my weight loss was so quick. So today, I put shorts on for the first time in a month (took it off right after the photo, as I feel so uncomfortable with anything around my hips or waist), pushed my belly out and registered that milestone. Hyperemesis is not in my past yet, but my new meds are at least helping me keep some food down. That’s a lot of progress from a week ago! ❤️

Not the pregnancy announcement I had in mind, but… we’re expecting baby number 3! ❤️🙏🏻 I’m 11 weeks pregnant today and this is probably the most fitting photo to describe my first trimester so far: hyperemesis gravidarum.

I was going to wait until I was feeling better, until I had a bump to show, until I could put some makeup on… but who knows when that will be? I’ve lost over 15lbs, been admitted to hospital twice on IV fluids for dehydration, spent my birthday (and weeks on end!) in bed and have been put on so many meds I’ve lost count.

Today, as I was leaving the hospital on new meds and after a bag of fluids - feeling like a human being for the first time in over a month - I decided that writing this post, although cathartic for me, may be just what another HG sufferer needs to read to make them feel a little bit less alone.

This is not the beautiful “surprise” pregnancy announcement we’re used to seeing, but for the 1-3% of women who suffer with HG, it may be the only one you can manage.

So, this is where I’ve been hiding. Baby is doing well, mama not so well. But I’m hanging in there and taking one day at a time!

Baby is due September 2021! ❤️
